Everyone was a New Beginner once...

Joining our Karate classes for the first time is a really easy thing to do.

Karate is an activity to be enjoyed with no pressure on the student (or Instructor) to reach a particular level/grade in a set period of time. You will improve in your own time with the guidance and assistance of the Instructor and your class mates.

As a new student at our Karate Classes you are asked to be respectful and polite and nice to your class mates. Improvement and any new grade comes with time and practice. Your instructor and your class mates will help you along the way.

Here are some questions you might have for Sensei:

What do I wear?

For your first class you don't need a Karate suit (unless you have one already). Sensei recommends wearing loose fitting sports clothes like:

    * track pants, cotton pants, cricket pants, leggings or shorts.
    * tee shirts or short sleeved polo shirts
    * NO SHOES or socks

What do I do when I get to the hall?

It is good to arrive about 10 minutes before your class starts so you can have a look around. You might even see some kids you already know.

Do I need to bring anything to my first class?

Always bring a drink bottle with water in it. No fizzy drinks or sports drinks please. It is a good idea to also bring a jumper or jacket, even in summer. Make sure your name is on everything. If you leave things behind Sensei will put them in the storeroom and you can collect them next week.

What if I don't like the training and I don't want to join?

No problem. Not everyone likes trying something new. If you decided it's not what you want then we hope to see you in the future.

What can I expect in my first class?

You will be joining a general class so a lot of the kids will already know a bit of Karate. Don't let that worry you. This is just your first lesson to see if you want to join. It doesn't take long to learn how to do the techniques like punch, kick, block and step and the teacher always makes sure you don't get left behind.

In your trial class you might be asked to sit down during some of the class. This is for your safety as we might be doing some things that are a bit technical and we wouldn't want you to get hurt in any way.

Can I join mid-term?

Not everyone is ready to start at the beginning of the term and sometimes it takes a while to get other activities sorted out. So yes, you can join at any time during the term.

If you are unsure of anything with the enrolment procedure, just ask. :)

New Student Testimonial

Sensei Oscar and all the black-belt instructors that assist him are great teachers. You will get in shape, learn self-defense and also receive insights into the deeper meaning of traditional martial arts. The  class morning is phenomenal, and so are the other days when different aspects of Shotokan Karate-do are emphasized. The place is great for kids as well as adults trying to get back into shape. Love this dojo. Dan O, Livonia.
