Below is a letter from Sensei Nick Palise. We all from Silverado Nippon
Karate feel sadness for this news. We are missing him in the Karate teaching
arena, already. He is one the greatest Karate instructor that Michigan has seen
in action. And the same time happiness for him to take it easy. Karate teaching
is not easy. Our goal as instructors is to pass the tradition of the Martial
Arts and make better person one student at at time.
All our best wishes to you Sensei Palise.

Dear Students, Friends, and Family,
As of May 21, 2008 and after forty four years of training and teaching in the
art of karate-do, the time has come for me to retire from teaching karate full
time, due to health and personal reasons. I will be celebrating my forty fourth
wedding anniversary, and want to spend my senior years with my wife Barbara and
my two sons Nick and Phillip, who have supported me in every endeavor I chose to
work. We would like to do some traveling, sight seeing and work on our health
and fitness regimen together. Karate has been a journey that has been beneficial
for me and my family, but with regret, I must retire from full time teaching. I
will continue as Senior Advisor for the American JKA Karate Association
International (AJKA-I) and as a consultant for the Michigan Karate Association
and the South Lyon Area Recreation Council.
Most of you know that I'm a musician, and will still continue play, perform and
write music, as this is what I’ve been doing my whole life. Physically, it's a
lot easier than teaching karate every night.
Sensei Jay Penfil will be taking my place as the chief instructor of the
Michigan Karate Association through the South Lyon Recreation Department. He is
dedicated to teaching Shotokan Karate and maintaining ties to our parent
organization, the (AJKA-I). His ability as a teacher is without question, and he
will continue to keep the standards of the AJKA-I to its highest level.
I will still be involved with the dojo in the capacity of testing, training,
competitions, and the planning of karate tournaments, but I will be turning over
the everyday duties of managing the dojo to Sensei Jay Penfil. Please support
him as you have supported me over these many years, and I believe you will gain
much insight to training with the Michigan Karate Association.
I will remain as Senior Advisor and keep in contact with the instructors and
students at the dojo, but on a limited basis. Thank you for your trust and
diligent training at the MKA; it's been an amazingly great and rewarding career.
I will miss you. Train Hard!
Yours in the art of Karate-Do,
Nick E. Palise Sensei
